Parvana's father is arrested by Taliban soldiers, leaving her family in a dire situation. Under Taliban law, women and girls cannot leave their homes alone, forcing Parvana and her mother and sisters into a state of confinement. With no man to provide for them, they face starvation. To save her family, Parvana disguises herself as a boy and takes on the role of breadwinner. As she ventures out, she encounters the harsh realities of life under Taliban rule, including landmines and violence. Despite the challenges, she discovers resilience and hope.
