This novel is set in the early twentieth century on Apple Island, a refuge for those escaping societal judgement. The story follows Benjamin Honey, who was born enslaved and later freed, and his Irish wife, Patience, as they establish a life together on the island. Over a century later, their descendants live alongside a diverse community of neighbours. The peace of their enclave is disrupted by the arrival of outside forces that threaten their way of life.
